Abstract: »Following the defeat by the Communist Party of China in 1949, the Kuomintang (KMT) transferred troops from mainland China to Taiwan and imposed martial law. In order to prevent soldiers from raping civilian women and contracting sexually transmitted diseases, the KMT established a military brothel system known as "military paradise" that run from the 1950s to the 1990s. The existence of "military paradise" reveals that the KMT shared similar ideologies with the Japanese Imperial Army, which was responsible for setting up the "comfort women" system during the World War II. I argue that despite the change in political powers and atmosphere from the colonial period to the Cold War period, there existed a continuity in ideologies about militant manhood and sexuality as well as women's sexuality and rights in Taiwan. While the issue of "comfort women" began to gain public attention from the 1991 onwards, due to the fierce political struggle between pro-independence and pro-reunification Taiwanese, the issue of military brothel has always been used to serve different political agendas. In this paper, I argue that despite the transition from the WWII to the Cold War, there was an ideological and cultural continuity between the "comfort women" and the "military paradise" systems. I reveal how the entanglement of militarism and nationalism continue to victimize and silence Taiwanese women both during and after the Cold War.« (Source: Association for Asian Studies) (Source: Association for Asian Studies)
